Oxygen Concentrator vs Oxygen Cylinder: Which Is Right for You?
How they work
An oxygen concentrator extracts oxygen from room air using a molecular sieve (PSA technology), producing a continuous supply at 93–96% purity. An oxygen cylinder stores compressed or liquid oxygen at high pressure.
Cost of operation
A concentrator has a higher upfront cost but near-zero running cost (just electricity). Cylinders have lower upfront cost but significant recurring refill costs, especially for long-term home therapy.
When to choose a concentrator
For continuous home oxygen therapy (LTOT) requiring up to 10 LPM, a concentrator is almost always the economical choice within 6 months. The Philips EverFlo at 5 LPM is a popular choice for home use.
When to choose a cylinder
For intermittent high-flow oxygen (>10 LPM), emergency backup, or portable transport, cylinders remain essential. Many patients use both: a concentrator for daily therapy and a cylinder for power outages.
